I realized the real power of copywriting in 2022
during an internship I took on my way out of the Marine Corps.
I was working with a small startup — a team of wildly passionate people digitizing old VHS tapes. Think home movies, weddings, dance recitals from ‘92 — all in danger of being lost for good.
My role? Write all of the fundraising copy for their GoFundMe launch.
I remember sitting in front of my laptop in the middle of the night drafting and redrafting the campaign story until it actually sounded like them —
scrappy, hopeful, rooted in nostalgia
scrappy, hopeful, rooted in nostalgia
and GENUINELY excited about preserving family memories.
Something about this project hit me straight in the heart, and I so desperately wanted it to succeed.
The day came and… we hit our fundraising goal faster than anyone ever expected!
And that’s when it clicked:
good copy isn’t just about saying something. It’s about translating feeling into words.
Copywriting = Creativity, Just Quieter
There’s a myth that still floats around in the marketing world — that copywriting is mostly strategic and creativity lives somewhere else.
But let’s be honest:
The best copywriters are some of the most observant creatives in the room.
We notice the gap between what people say and what they mean.
We catch tone shifts, body language, the little pauses that happen right before someone says,
“I don’t know… it just doesn’t feel right.
That’s not fluff. That’s the work!
What Makes Great Copy “Work”
Good copy doesn’t beg for attention.
It builds trust, quietly and consistently.
Here’s what separates strong brand copy from the kind that gets scrolled past:
- Specificity over slogans. It doesn’t try to say everything — just the right thing.
- Clarity as a creative tool. It trims the noise and sharpens the feeling.
- Voice as a mirror. The words sound like your brand would talk if it had a heartbeat.
And it’s never about copy for copy’s sake.
It’s about helping people see themselves in what you’re offering — and then nudging them toward action in a way that feels natural, not forced.
Creativity That Converts Isn’t Loud — It’s Intentional
Here’s a secret:
Some of the highest-converting copy is also the most invisible.
It doesn’t shout.
It doesn’t dance for attention.
It simply feels right — like you’ve landed somewhere you were already leaning toward.
Whether it’s a homepage, a product label, or a newsletter intro, that kind of writing is never accidental. It’s the result of thoughtful strategy and creative instinct playing well together.
In a World Full of Noise, Clarity Is Art
People are bombarded with messages every single day. You don’t need more words,
you need the right ones
in the right order
with just enough breathing room to land.
So, if you’re looking to refine your brand voice, tell your story with clarity, or turn your ideas into copy that actually connects — let’s talk.
The words are already there.
We just have to shape them.
